Classic Recipe: An Egg in a Hole

There is nothing like a homemade breakfast with a fried egg. The day seam's to start much better when you get it off on the right foot with a high protein breakfast. A little toast on the side for some starch is also very yummy. If both these breakfast entrĂ©es are so good, why not combine them? Well people have. For century's, the classic Egg in a Hole recipe (AKA: One Eyed Sam) has been floating around by word of mouth; Until Now! So here's the ingredient list:

  • 2 Egg's
  • 2 Pieces of Bread
  • A small amount of butter (to grease the griddle)
  • A Small cup (to cut a hole in the bread)
  • Your favorite flavored Jelly
We start with heating up the frying pan on the stove (low-medium heat), with a bit of butter melted on the pan. This helps toast the bread, and fry the eggs.

While the griddle is heating up, use the small cup (or shot glass) to cut a circle in the middle of the bread. The placement of this hole should be as close as to the center as possible, to allow for support of the cracked egg on all sides of the bread.
One idea, instead of a circle is to make a box, or a heart, or any funky design you please ( including an Egg in a Bell Pepper or some Salsa Holes). The extra bread can be used as a light snack, or fry it along next to your egg, or feel free to dip it in some egg batter to make a small piece of French Toast!
When the griddle is warmed up, place the bread (with the hole in it) on the pan as flat as can be and crack the egg's into the holes. Be sure to aim for the hole, and not let the egg seep from under the bread. While this cooks (5-8 minutes depending on how you like your eggs), be sure to have your plate and jelly ready! Before flipping, be sure to toss a desirable amount of salt and pepper on your frying egg.
When the egg has whitened up and cooked, you can flip the bread (with the egg inside), to fry the top side of the egg (if desired). When you feel the egg has cooked through enough, your Egg in a Hole is ready for jelly time! Placing the bread/egg combination on a plate and spreading jelly on top, your ready for your Egg in a Hole breakfast! So next time your wondering how to mix up your breakfast routine, remember the Egg in a Hole recipe, you wont be disappointed!

P.s. If your feeling a little extra creative, try to get two yoke's out of one egg!
