The Ice Cream Tub

Blame it on Global Warming! At least, that’s what people say when it comes to ice bergs melting, crazy weather patterns, and warmer winters. But why stop there! I think Global warming’s effects are extending to the local supermarket. If you haven’t seen the change in the Ice Cream Tub recently, then this post is worth a read!

Things started to 'heat up' when I was seeking out a cheap deal to curb my ice cream cravings. Rather then going with a high quality, low quantity brand. I stumbled upon the “Ice Cream Tub” or ICT we’ll call it for all practical purposes. I fell in love with it when I discovered I could have a full bowl of ice cream, smothered in chocolate sauce, every night of the week for 2 weeks straight, without requiring an additional trip to the store. The ICT can be found in the frozen section of any major super market next to all the flavorful ice creams. However it typically goes unnoticed by the casual observer due to its opaque bucket clearly showing the contents inside and its distinctive thin red plastic handle strap.  Additionally, the limited selection of flavors and bulkiness of this product usually keeps shoppers overlooking these gallon buckets full of frozen goodness.
Typical cost’s for an ICT used to be about 5 bucks. I remember paying $5.49 in the hay day before these things before they were ‘blowin up’ off the shelves. Unfortunately, in today’s economy, we are seeing ICT’s sky rocket in price. My recent adventure to the supermercado, led me to find the ICT to be $6.99. (That’s a 27.3224% increase). Unfortunately this is not the worst of it. More recently at food stores all across the nation, there has been a shift away from the large 1 gallon red strap (that’s red strap, not red stripe.. you’re on the wrong blog) ICT to a smaller half gallon blue trap ICT (This really shouldn’t even deserve the name ICT, but we’ll let it slide). The blue strap reduction tubs are the same price as the original red strap ICT.
Moving forward! I leave a few reasons for this tub conversion from it ICT to the blue strap half barrel.
 1. The deflated economy has pushed more shoppers to the “free-cheapo-buyer” side of the spectrum when shopping and taking a careful look at possible deals the grocery store is more rewarding.
2. Plain is the new thing! Perhaps ice cream lovers are craving the simple flavors of vanilla with scattered flakes of chocolate or a sherbet you will never forget or the occasional cookie dough cluster vanilla or Pure Chocolate.  All these flavors keep you wanting more… more from the tub, and more tubs when they empty.
3. The third possibility the size of the tub is changing, is due to global warming. This is the only other likely possibility. As the temperature of the planet heats up, it must cost more to produce and store ice cream in its frozen state. This cost is simply transferred to ice cream consumers like me.

I guess my options are to continue to bike and walk and hope the ICT (and the planet) doesn’t get any hotter than it already is!

  1. I just read this out loud to Ryan. We both really liked it. But we have a strong disagreement now...he says he likes the ICT and ate it growing up.

I say, NASTY!! This stuff is pure artificial flavor (look at the ingrediats) and not even really ice cream! Compare to Bryers...milk, sugar. That's it.

Do you body a favor...eat LESS often, but HIGHER quality!

I bet you have to smother it with chocolate sauce to make it palatable!!

    Global warming...ha!

  2. Haha!! These don't seem too bad actually. These save on money right, and the quality can't be that bad (Kerry)

They're good for someone who loves ice cream every night!:)
